Manual Therapy Session
During manual therapy, a careful assessment by the physiotherapist is followed by special skills and techniques to glide these joints free again. The patient is taught how to move the joints themselves as home exercises where possible. This self-therapy is useful to sustain the effect of manual therapy.
Sometimes joint stiffness can be due to tight muscles knots (i.e. trigger point). In such cases, the manual therapy will involve releasing these tight muscle spots using specific massage techniques.Other manual therapy techniques used:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joint mobilization and manipulation
- Lymphatic drainage
- Passive and assisted functional movement
Manual therapy can be applied to a range of different regions and conditions. As such, it is commonly incorporated into many treatment plans, both as the primary treatment and supporting treatment. For example, manual therapy is often combined with physical exercise to strengthen your muscles and restore the range of motion. As such, manual therapy techniques and their place in the overall treatment plan is often customised to your needs.
